DPI has organised in Africa since the 1980s, when regional development offices were established to serve anglophone countries (initially hosted in Zimbabwe) and francophone countries (initially hosted in Mauritius). Today the region brings together national federations and umbrella bodies of persons with disabilities from across the continent.
African members work on the domestication and monitoring of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), disability-inclusive development, the leadership of women and youth with disabilities, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in national poverty-reduction and development plans.
